DAVE F: If you attended the 2011 Indianapolis Horrorhound Weekend, with the intention of finding the many horror hosts in attendance, you should have had no trouble in doing so. Occupying their own room this year, most were together in a single spot (with the exception of Sammy Terry & Joe Bob Briggs).

We had passed this section on our way to the celebrity rooms and noted a few familiar faces. As we entered, we immediately saw Roxsy Tyler, Midnite Mausoleum, and Dr. Calamari. Dr Calamari (easy to recognize as the guy with the tentacles coming out of his face) is part of a troop of performers called DARK CARNIVAL.

img_5417Dr. Calamari (as if you couldn’t guess)

DARK CARNIVAL performed a LIVE horror show in Bloomington, Indiana and were the masterminds behind the 2010 Vampira Tribute. This event (fully covered HERE) saw the largest gathering of horror hosts from across the country who descended upon Indianapolis to pay their respects to the “mother of all horror hosts,” Maila Nurmi, a.k.a. Vampira.

As we posed for pictures we heard a voice from the left say, “Well, it’s the Daves!” I turned and saw the great Son of Ghoul, himself, standing next to a display of his shows. As one of the classic hosts (celebrating 25 years on the air this June) I started getting tongue-tied and found myself blathering, “Son of Ghoul! You’re one of the most powerful hosts here!” He seemed to find that statement amusing and remarked, “Powerful?! Huh? You mean like a superhero or something?” We both laughed.

img_43771

He walked around his booth and we posed for a picture. We bought a set of his hosted, vintage cartoons and talked a bit. He spoke of his heart attack last year (not long after the 2010 Horrorhound Weekend) and stated he was feeling much better. He looked like a million bucks and seemed a much peppier than our last meeting. He honored me by signing a picture from that occasion and I’ve been riding a “Son of Ghoul high” ever since.

David seemed to be in his own euphoric state, as this was an entirely new experience for him. Unable to attend last year’s convention, and somewhat isolated in his New England venue, he has not enjoyed the same access to many of the hosts that I’ve had.

DAVID A: For me the highlight of HorrorHound Weekend was certainly the hosts. I was not fortunate enough to have attended the previous year’s Vampira Tribute so I would be meeting all of these hosts for the first time in person. In fact, even though my co-blogger, Dave Fuentes, did in fact meet most of them the previous year, this time it was going to be a new experience for him as well because of this site.  Since creating TERROR FROM BEYOND THE DAVES last July, we had gotten to know many of the attending hosts really well, through e-mails and phone calls.

Going into this convention Dave and I knew that the hosts would be our priority, since so much of Terror From Beyond The Daves is devoted to them. Sure we wanted to meet some of the celebrities too, but in our eyes the hosts were the true celebs! One thing we have learned is that planning is key to a successful convention experience. If you go in unorganized, you may very well miss out on some of the best stuff! When we arrived our main priority for Friday evening was to get the movie celebrities out of the way…in other words, we wanted to meet them all before the Saturday crowds and long lines. Thankfully our planning paid off and we accomplished everything relatively early, allowing us to concentrate the rest of the evening, and much of the remainder of the weekend, on the people we really came to see.

Prior to this event, I had only really met Penny Dreadful, Garou and Manfred Von Bulow from Penny Dreadful’s Shilling Shockers (not that this is a bad thing, believe me). I was also fortunate that the night before HorrorHound, I was able to meet the one and only Svengoolie (see my post HERE). Now I was going to get to meet some of the other great characters that have helped make Terror From Beyond The Daves such a success.

2010_101600921Penny and the Daves from Rock & Shock, October, 2010.

When we first entered the Host Room, I was a bit overwhelmed, to say the very least! Hosts for as far as the eyes could see! I just sort of stood there dumbfounded, not knowing who we should approach first. One of the first people we actually saw and talked to was in fact not a host, but someone who is very important to the host community…artist Brian Maze. He has become a great friend and does all of our host artwork, as well as a lot of artwork for the hosts themselves. We talked to him a bit and then moved onto the hosts themselves.

2011_032601511The Daves and artist, Brian Maze.

One host I was really anxious to meet was Dr. Destruction. He and Dave had become great friends and I was a big fan of his show. When you first meet him he is somewhat intimidating, being a larger than life character, literally! Destruction is a very tall man who towers over everyone near him. When you first see him it’s easy to be nervous going up to him, not knowing what to expect. I knew he was a nice guy from what Dave had been telling me but upon meeting him, it was quickly obvious that Dr. Destruction is one of the genuinely nicest people I have ever met. We spent a lot of time with him over the weekend and he added so much to our overall experience and provided countless numbers of laughs!

2011_03261018Me and Dr. Destruction.

Another priority to me was none other than Ms. Monster and her Monster Melons. As soon as she entered the room it is not difficult to see her…how many attractive women do you know have bright orange hair and blue skin? We introduced ourselves to the trio and were immediately welcomed with open arms.

2011_03260172Me getting motor-boated by the Melons.

They were so friendly, funny and appreciative of what we have done for the horror host community. In fact, they were about to do a live broadcast on The Monster Channel and included us, interviewing us about the site! It was amazing watching Ms. Monster, Tit and Tat perform. They have such a great chemistry and the stuff they do is just so damn funny. I know I am looking forward to seeing them all at future events!

2011_03260174Being interviewed on The Monster Channel.

Some of the other hosts we met the first night, that really impressed us were Butch R. Cleaver, Chuck DeClown, Roxsy Tyler, Blake Powell from MIDNITE MAUSOLEUM (we actually didn’t meet Marlena and Robyn until Saturday) and Fritz the Nite Owl. After talking to these people for months through e-mails and such, it was an honor and pleasure to finally be talking to them in person, and being treated as an equal, and not just a fan. This is really what helped make the whole HorrorHound experience one to remember. There was just so much respect in the room and everyone seemed to be having such a great time.

2011_03260148  The Daves and Butch R. Cleaver.

It was also during Friday evening that we met event organizer, “HorrorHound Magazine” writer and fellow horror host fan, Jason Hignite! We cannot thank him enough for his kindness and generosity. This is one of those rare events that I will remember forever!

2011_03260446

Because there were so many hosts there, it is impossible to cover them all in one blog so there will be followups to this, with our experiences with hosts such as Count Gore De Vol, Karlos Borloff, The Bone Jangler, Ivonna Cadaver, Evelle Lechat and many others! So stay tuned!!!

Horrorhound Horror Host Hall of Fame 2011!

Hall of Fame Logo design created by Basement Boy*

This year’s Indianapolis HorrorHound Weekend was noteworthy for featuring multiple events centered around the art of horror hosting. Perhaps the most significant of these was the addition of horror hosts to an actual “Hall of Fame” sponsored by “Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

HorrorHound events organizer, Jason Hignite, oversaw this ceremony and his devotion to horror hosts can not be overstated. Any horror host able to look outside their own personal interests can  not deny that his making one of the country’s largest horror conventions a venue for them to not only feel welcome, but also an opportunity to share their work with a larger audience, has helped rejuvenate this nearly extinct art. It has also encouraged younger fans to appreciate the work of commercial hosts from a bygone era, as well as introduce those of us who did grow up with a host to become acquainted with some of the other personalities our fellow fans were watching across the country. Perhaps none of the host-related events at HorrorHound best illustrated this than the Hall of Fame Inductions.

gothicG.O.T.H.I.C. logo created by Basement Boy*

Mr. Hignite also works with a sister website of HorrorHound called G.O.T.H.I.C. (Gathering of Television Horror Hosts – Internet – Cinema).  Though no official plaque design has been created for the awards, G.O.T.H.I.C. will be holding a contest for this express purpose and we’ll definitely keep you posted on how to get involved with that. Once created, the awards will see their way to their proud owners while those who have passed away will have their awards housed at Ripley’s.

This year, thirteen horror hosts were to have the honor of being the FIRST Inductees to the Horror Host Hall of Fame. They are Vampira (Maila Nurmi), Zacherley/Roland (John Zacherle), Marvin (Terry Bennett), Sammy Terry (Bob Carter), The Cool Ghoul (Dick Von Hoene), Dr. Morgus the Magnificent (Sid Noel), M.T. Graves (Charlie Baxter), Count Gore deVol (Dick Dyszel), Ghoulardi (Ernie Anderson), Sir Graves Ghastly (Lawson J. Deming), The Bowman Body (Bill Bowman), Svengoolie (Jerry G. Bishop), and the recently deceased Dr. Creep (Barry Hobart) in one of the evenings most emotional moments.

img_45621The Daves with Count Gore de Vol

The first host inducted was, appropriately enough, the very first horror host. Ms Monster had the honor of inducting Vampira whom she described as “The first mythological creature of the Atomic Age.”  Maila Nurmi’s Vampira began hosting in 1954 and, last year, was the subject of her own HorrorHound Tribute (covered in greater detail HERE). A few years later, hosts would be popping up across the country! This was due to the “Shock” movie package – a collection of over 50 classic monster movies given to 142 media markets across the country.

img_4934Ms Monster inducts Vampira!

The addition of a horror host was something that could benefit the station on two major points; for one thing, nervous TV execs weren’t sure how these movies would play to a general audience (this was the 50′s/60′s after all). Not wanting to literally scare their viewers away, a comical host might help alleviate anxiety a bit by providing some cheesy laughs. Hosts could also serve to help fill up some time on movies that ran shorter than their program slots provided.

47155_486808776392_690816392_7039329_6090429_nBela – Not ready for Prime Time?

As a result, the late 50′s/early 60′s saw some memorable, classic horror hosts enter American popular culture. These men and women were professional broadcasters who, by exercising their versatility, afforded them a bit of job security along with a relatively cheap method for promoting these old films.

sivadfanphotoTennessee’s Sivad

Cinema Insomnia’s Mr. Lobo (who had the privilege of inducting Count Gore de Vol) also pointed out that the “Shock” package of films weren’t alone in creating a legion of hosts.  “The Creature Feature” package brought about some of the most legendary names (such as Bob Wilkins in California) as well as happy monster memories for young fans like myself  across the country who saw these films both with, and without, a host.

crature-featuresBoth Daves grew up with their own Creature Features back in the 70′s!

While hosts were generally spread out across the country, it is interesting to note that their basic formulas were remarkably similar (although each artist was still completely unique). Athough professional broadcasters with long TV careers, many had relatively short tenures as horror hosts. Despite this fact, it was during this period that they many would garner their largest base of fans who would not only equate them with happier times, but for also being their main source of their favorite type of movies. It is likely that many people reading this blog were deeply affected by a horror host from “back in the day” (the two men running this site included).
1Chicago’s Son of Svengoolie

Because these hosts were fairly isolated, it is unlikely that anyone (outside of a horror host buff) would be familiar with everyone inducted at this ceremony. Even many of the presenters themselves, inducting individuals clearly before their time, had only a vague understanding of whom they were honoring.

TERROR FROM BEYOND THE DAVES isn’t going to pretend to be any more savvy…and we’re certainly not going to pretend to be older. We would, however, like to offer a special post to each of the inductees and, when possible, gain the perspective of an actual fan of the host’s as well. Anyone reading who may have their own memories of the aforementioned classic hosts, please contact either Dave via our contact link.

Count Gore De Vol, like Vampira, was covered in more detail in an earlier piece which you can read  HERE . The remaining inductees, however, will be given spotlights in the coming weeks. When possible we will share pictures, clips, and fan anecdotes. We’d like as many folks as possible to contribute so PLEASE send those memories and help us give these Horror Hosts the tributes they deserve!

Tribute to Indianapolis Horror Host Sammy Terry!

One of the more emotional and heartfelt moments of the Horror Host Hall of Fame ceremony that took place at Horrorhound Weekend convention in Indianapolis last March came with the induction of one of Indiana’s own. Captain Crypt and Fenriz Fatal were given the honor of inducting one of the country’s most prolific ghouls – Sammy Terry! The two hosts became visibly emotional while delivering their tribute and it was clear that, unlike many of the inductees whose awards were presented by hosts who didn’t have Clue #1 as to who they really were, these two clearly did. There is no doubt that the best folks to tributize any celebrity is the “fans” themselves and we Daves wished that could have been the case for all of them.

Captain Crypt & Fenriz Fatal

This past year, I approached various Sammy Terry fans including the Horror Dungeon guys, a couple of die hard fans I met at DAYS OF THE DEAD this past July, and a fan who wrote us asking that he be added to the report while supplying an update. All of these people promised to send some memories along for a proper tribute but, at this date, none actually came through. Let this be an open invitation to them and ANYONE else reading this post to please feel free to share their Sammy Terry Memories in the comment portion of this blog.

Radio personality, Bob Carter, created the Sammy Terry (play on the word “cemetery”) back in the early 1960′s. He would enjoy a long tenure as Indianapolis’ host spanning the greater portion of three decades!

After Indiana station, WTTV, purchased the famed “Shock Theater” package (over 50 classic horror films released to television in the late 1950′s) they (like many other stations across the country) opted to have a horror host present the films. Sammy Terry began as a “voice over” host before his popularity would eventually lead to him performing in front of the camera. Hosting via “Nightmare Theater” which ran up until 1989. Recently, the torch has been passed to his son, whom I got to speak with at the aforementioned DAYS OF THE DEAD.

Like many hosts, Sammy Terry also had a sidekick – in the form of a floating rubber spider named “George.”

Those attending the Hall of Fame ceremony who may have been unfamiliar with the Indianapolis host, were given a clear idea of what he might have been like as his own son, dressed in his father’s iconic costume, took to the stage and accepted the award and his behalf. Sharing his own story of what it was like to grow up having a horror host for a father. Below is the entire Sammy portion of the Hall of fame induction…

Please share your own Sammy Terry memories with us! Also visit the official Sammy Terry website by clicking HERE!

Godzilla and The Horror Host Connection!

????????

G-FEST (Godzilla Festival) is the quintessential celebration of Godzilla and all his fellow Kaiju (Japanese Monsters). I’ve been a fan of Godzilla and Gamera ever since I was a kid. Growing up in the 1970′s, it was via shows like Creature Features or The Son of Svengoolie to bring those movies to me. People who did not grow up with a horror host usually have a hard time understanding why some of us adult fans get so weepy with adulation at the mere mention of our childhood ghoul. Well, when you’re a “monster kid,” surrounded by more “normal” kids who want to play baseball or watch The Dukes of Hazard, the person faithfully delivering your favorite films becomes more than just a TV star, he becomes your idol…one of Godzilla proportions. In my case it also helped that I found my host’s corny humor hilarious and his less than stellar singing voice pitch perfect.

img600

Last February I asked G-FEST Mastermind, J.D. Lees, if David Albaugh and I could do a forum at this year’s event talking about horror hosts and their cultivation of Godzilla fans. As mentioned in an earlier post, my Godzilla fandom was in no small thanks to Rich Koz’s Svengoolie from back in his “Son of” days. Actually, I credit Svengoolie with turning my young mind on to many different kinds of sci-fi/horror films including the giant bug movies like THE DEADLY MANTIS and TARANTULA as well as the more traditional Universal classic monsters. But it was safe to say that the day Sven presented me with Godzilla, the King of ALL Monsters, I would be hooked forever!

J.D. replied to my request stating that he wanted an outline of what the discussion would be about and that he’d think it over.  A couple of months later I decided to scratch the whole idea after learning that David would be unable to attend. Oh well…perhaps we could try again next year (SIDE NOTE: David is as big a G-Fan as myself and I’ve made it my personal goal to one day get him to G-FEST). Apparently something got lost in cyber space…

Two weeks before the event, J.D. asked if I needed AV equipment for my presentation (???). Apparently it was a GO after all! And, ironically enough, the very host responsible for my fandom would also be appearing (covered HERE).

img_3263

I wasn’t thrilled about having to sit up there all by myself but, as fate should have it, I wouldn’t be. Svengoolie super-fan, Jamie Lee Cortese, agreed to join me last minute. Before graduating from high school, Jamie had worked extensively on a horror host research paper. This put her in contact with many horror hosts (along with a visit to the 2011 Horrorhound Weekend we David and I met her for her the first time) and she was very kind to share her stories of meeting many of them here on our site. Jamie and her family are about the nicest people around and, as she is a young fan who was only recently introduced to Godzilla via Svengoolie, was a welcome addition to the forum.

The biggest surprise came shortly before I sat down and was just about ready to begin the forum. In walked Svengoolie, himself, (despite having just signed autographs the previous two hours) and, to my delight, joined me on the stage. He talked about Godzilla and how he’d just spoken with quite a few fans crediting him as their Godzilla ambassador growing up. Before leaving he also said some very kind words regarding this blog. I was truly honored and it certainly shows what a great man Rich Koz truly is (and not just because he brought Godzilla into my life).

Soom the forum began with a brief Horror Host 101 followed by a video presentation I’d put together days before. This was a compilation of classic horror host skits and scenes that revolved around Godzilla and Kaiju films. Many of these were courtesy of my friend, Michael Monahan (producer of AMERICAN SCARY as well as author to its book version) who sent me these last minute. After the video we did a Q&A and there was no shortage of questions. Some of the questions were about Svengoolie and thank GOD Jamie Lee was there to provide insights even I didn’t know.

Before sharing the YouTube clips, I want to give a Godzilla-sized THANK YOU to Svengoolie, Michael Monahan, and Jamie Lee Cortese without whom I’d have never pulled this off. I also want to thank my son, Alex, and Ron and Angela Urban for taking pictures and giving their support! NOTE: the two clips provide a shortened presentation featuring only a quarter of the host clips I’d actually shown at the event.

Below is the conclusion (after about 20 minutes more of host clips). The ending Q&A was cut off about 2 minutes before it actually ended.

And here is the footage from Svengoolie’s show…

Terror from Beyond the Daves FINAL Horror Host Report!

Greetings, and welcome to the FINAL Horror Host Report featured on “Terror from Beyond the Daves.” Both of us Daves want to thank all the hosts who participated and, of course, everyone who’s faithfully tuned in to read it. It’s been an amazing 2 years but also a lot of work. We will always be grateful for it as it was instrumental in helping us win a Rondo and, even more importantly, forging friendships between us and many of those we featured. While certainly the “labor of love,” both David and I have been pretty busy with other facets of our lives and the hours it takes each week to put a single report together just isn’t there for us anymore. After several weeks of deep discussions, we decided it was time to call it a day. We debated keeping it going through the 1st of the year but, then again, what better finale then the last weekend before Halloween? To save space, our usual practice is to delete our reports after a few weeks but, for novelty’s sake, we will be leaving this one in our archives.

Other than the disappearance of the report, the site will continue going and always remain Horror Host friendly place. There are no plans to stop stalking our childhood horror host, Svengoolie, attending conventions, and partaking in horror host activities. In fact, I’ll be attending THREE of Svengoolie’s four appearances (not bad) this weekend alone. ANYONE who wants to share their pictures and narrative of events that we’re unable to attend are absolutely welcome to submit. Just shoot us a message at terrordaves@ymail.com and we can get that going.

Again, thanks to everyone who assisted us in this weekly post that no blog was ever really designed to support (WordPress, we apologize for all the times we swore at you on Thursday nights).  I guess it would be cliche’ for us to end with “Stay Scary,” so we will simply say, “See you at the next event!”

ELVIRA, Mistress of the Dark, is excited to announce a new series of Elvira comic books set to debut in 2013.  Working with author R.H. Stavis (“Daniel’s Veil,” Activision’s ” Transformers: War for Cybertron”) and artist Jeff Zarnow (“Godzilla, “68,” “Battle Beasts” ), the stories will focus on the Elvira’s MISS-adventures centered around a backstory about Halloween. The collaboration was teased to audiences at the recent “Stan Lee’s Comikaze” event in September in Los Angeles.   “Unlike a typical licensing deal, we are bringing together the power of the Elvira brand, a top-notch female writer and a rising artist to develop a new line of comic books independently,” says Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. “We will then find a publishing/distribution partner that shares our vision to unleash these stories to the world.”

Not surprisingly, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark has been pretty busy this Halloween Season too with a recent appearance at Knox Berry Farm! Her latest DVD was released late September (click on image below to order) and a new one is on the way!

Well here’s the last report from the Dr….

This weeks show will be filmed at the s.w. libraries zombie homecoming. with video footage shot with classic host, Mr. Mephisto, at the Jerry Smith Pumpkin farm! Its sad news that the Daves are ending the weekly report but I understand the work that goes into it. keeping this going for as long as they did deserves all of our respect. with new hosts popping up all the time one does wonder if its getting a little mundane. I’m not knocking anyone out here but I do get the feeling hosting has become something anyone can do, and although they can, do they do it well??? I guess is doesn’t not matter…

In any case I can only think of the words of My favorite Bozo..( Its nice to be important, but more important to be nice). Thanks again DAVES!!!!  This is sad news out-shined only by  KENOSHA HAVING TRICK OR TREAT ON THE 28th in the day time!!!! UGGGH!!!!

Halloween is here!

Well, almost here.

Time for trick or treat and we have a real treat for you.

This coming weekend, on Movie Madness with Dr. Praxis, we will be featuring the movie, Horror Hotel starring Sir Christopher Lee.

On the recommendation of her professor (Christopher Lee), a young female student (Venetia Stevenson) travels to the fictional Massachusetts town of Whitewood to do
some research into witchcraft. She finds the town occupied by the reincarnation of an infamous witch (Patricia Jessel) burned at the stake in the 17th century; in order
to sustain her immortality, virgins must be sacrificed to her every year – and this year, the student has been the chosen victim.

This film has been compared to Psycho due to structural similarities. Both films begin by establishing an attractive blonde woman as the viewpoint character, leading
the audience to assume she will be the protagonist through the rest of the story. In both films, the blonde travels to a remote location and checks into a hotel or
motel run by an eccentric manager. In both cases, the audience’s expectations are shattered before the midpoint of the story when the blonde is abruptly stabbed to
death. In both films, the blond’s sibling is involved in the search for her; both films include a “shock” scene in which a corpse is revealed, and both films were
released in the same year (1960).

Greetings, friends!

It’s hard to believe, but it’s already THAT TIME… your friends at the MANOR are gearing up for their annual HALLOWEEN SPECIAL…

…but before WE can think about trick-or-treating, we’ve got a bit of a mess to clean up.

Remember when Zelnak sent us on a wild goose chase to the Crystal Rose Gallery (where we encountered the giant god Chuku, among other things)? Our shenanigans DID cause quite a bit of damage, and proprietor Jorge Rodriguez has finally caught up with us… to make up for the disaster we caused, we’ve got to work at the gallery for Halloween… and every exhibit has a story to tell… and every story is presented uncut and uncensored… will any of us make it out at all?

This is OUR Halloween… what about YOURS? We hope you’ll spend a couple of hours with us this weekend… after all, ’tis the season!

Meanwhile, the MANOR salutes KAT HORDERN and COREY JONES on the occasion of their marriage on Friday, October 26th… ceremony to be performed by… YOURS TRULY!

It’s an extra-special Halloween weekend… and it’s all yours at the MANOR!

A school district in Skokie, Illinois (UPDATE: and now another in Seattle) is banning  Halloween. We here at Ormsby’s Cinema Insane are upset over school officials forcing their PC zaniness on little kids, who should be allowed to have a childhood and enjoy holidays like Halloween. Please share the video and get the word out. Soon, there may not be a Halloween for children anymore if we don’t fight this.

STAY MAD Fright Fans!!

This week on “Nightmare Cinema (KTV 14), just in time for Halloween, “Encounter With The Unknown” (1973). Three eerie tales based on actual events are enacted in this film. First, three college students play a prank on a geeky classmate. Next, a ghoulish sound emanates from a mist-shrouded hole in the Earth near where a Missouri boy has lost his dog. Third, a senator returning home from a party finds a lost girl on a bridge. Narrated by Rod Serling. We have unearthed a fine seasonal cartoon in “The Headless Horseman” and we will have the appropriately titled chapter four of “The Green Hornet Strikes Again: ‘A Night of Terror,’” along with a handful of vintage TV ads. “Nightmare Cinema”: TV Old School! (Check local listings)

Welcome to The Vortexx, your home away from home for horror hosts, B-movies, and cult flicks! Our movies run 24/7 and the chat room is open at all times. Join us at 9 (ET) Monday-Wednesday and at 10 (ET) Thursday-Saturday for our featured movie(s) and a moderated chat. And be sure to check out this week’s Halloween specials, including an all-day Halloween marathon on Wednesday! Many of our hosts join us in the chat room on the night of their show, so this is your chance to meet the creative and talented folks who make these movies possible. You can find up-to-date information on our Facebook fan page http://www.facebook.com/pages/ARTV/138081346258078

Friday (10/26).  DEMENTED DRIVE-IN with Floyd Cadaverous presents THE WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON  (1973). Starring Biff McGuire as the Nixonian president, Dean Stockwell as his ill-fated speech writer, Clifton James as the attorney general, and Michael Dunn as Dr. Kiss (a not-so-subtle reference to Dr. Henry Kissinger). Released in the midst of the Watergate scandal, this movie was hastily put together and frankly looks it, but these fine actors make the most out of their material and the werewolf make-up is actually pretty cool.

Saturday (10/27). 10:00 P.M. THE LATE DR LADY SHOW presents ASYLUM (1972) starring Peter Cushing, Herbert Lom, Britt Ekland, and Charlotte Rampling.  A young psychiatrist interviews four inmates in a mental asylum and hears four stories of murder, revenge, and the macabre. Written by Robert Bloch and directed by Hammer veteran Roy Ward Baker. Followed at Midnight by Chapter 6 of THE MONSTER AND THE APE on Saturday Night Serials with Mortimer Van Creep.

Monday (10/29). 9:00 P.M.  ALTERNATIVE REALITIES with Dr. Sigmund Zoid and Sluggo presents their Halloween special — WHITE ZOMBIE (1932) starring Bela Lugosi. Sure you’ve probably seen it before, but have you ever seen it in 3-D? Well, tonight is your chance! It’s the first zombie movie ever — and still arguably one of the best.

Tuesday (10/30). 9:00 P.M.  BORDELLO OF HORROR with Freakshow and Sin-D Vicious presents their Halloween special — THE GHOST (1963). Not just any ghost, mind you, but the ghost of Dr. Hitchcock of “Horrible Dr. Hitchcock” fame. Starring Barbara Steele as the doctor’s unfaithful wife and directed by Riccardo Freda, who had a great influence on both Mario Bava and Dario Argento. This movie has lots of atmosphere, lots of Babs, and a terrific twist ending, so don’t miss it!

Tuesday (10/30). 11:00 P.M. LENNY’S INFERNO starring MR. MEPHISTO presents THE MONSTER MAKER (1944) starring J. Carrol Naish, Glenn Strange, Ray “Crash” Corrigan, and Ace the Wonder Dog. A mad scientist injects his enemies with acromegaly virus, causing them to become hideously deformed. Albert Glasser, who composed the score for tonight’s movie for a fee of $250, would go on to score a staggering 170 movies between 1944-1962, as well as 300 television shows and 450 radio programs.

Wednesday (10/31). What better place to spend Halloween then at The Vortexx Halloween Marathon! We will be presenting an around-the-clock showing of the George Romero classic, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), hosted by some of the finest horror hosts in the business, including Dr. Sigmund Zoid and Sluggo from Alternative Realities, Freakshow & Sin-D Vicious from Bordello of Horror, Floyd Cadaverous from Demented Drive-In, Sebastian Hexx & the gang from Frightmare Alley, PumpkinMan from  Fright Night Theater, Dr. David Lady from The Late Dr Lady Show, Riggor & Nyte from Riggor Mortiss Presents, and The Host from Screaming Horror Theater. This one is gonna be special, folks, so don’t miss it!

Thursday (11/1). 10:00 P.M. DEADGAR’S DARK COFFIN CLASSICS with Deadgar Winter, Cap’n Gray Skull, and Countess Kevorkian present ATOM AGE VAMPIRE (1963). A singer (Susanne Loret) is horribly disfigured in a car accident, and a mad scientist (Alberto Lupo) is determined to restore her beauty, regardless of how many women he must kill. For some unexplained reason, the scientist occasionally turns into a horrible reptile-faced creature.

THE THING about “Days of the Dead” Indianapolis!

$

943387_521061004620741_1997242146_n

The inimitable “Russ Wrangler” arrived at my place around 1pm; all smiles and full of energy. Clad in sunglasses and sandals, he looked more prepared for a day at the beach as opposed to a horror convention but clearly the overall message was “vacation” and a welcomed one at that. We loaded my things and immediately embarked for Indianapolis with no lulls in conversation, making the drive go by much quicker.

This was my third Days of the Dead in Indianapolis (fourth overall) and Russ’ second. I remember attending the very first one while being impressed with how fan-friendly it was; something I’d hoped hadn’t changed. It seems like fan conventions of any kind start off slow and friendly and, should they find success, later become out-of-control Goliath’s with the fans getting lost somewhere in the mix.

site_header

With July being such a busy month in terms of horror activities, I wasn’t sure if I was attending this event solo and for a single night (as I’d done their Chicago event last November covered HERE) or overnight with Russ since his attendance wasn’t certain. Having just celebrated his birthday on the Fourth of July, and with us already slated to attend the upcoming Fright Night Film Fest in Louisville, I completely understood. Ultimately, it would be our mutual love of John Carpenter’s The Thing that would become the deciding factor.

The_Thing_poster

That’s the funny thing about my fandom of John Carpenter…as much I love his iconic Halloween, I’m a far bigger fan of The Fog and The Thing. Though neither would prove as successful at the box office, to me they’re both damn near perfect movies and worth multiple viewings. The 2013 Days of the Dead in Indianapolis would see the largest gathering of cast members from The Thing as well as a collection of memorabilia courtesy of John Hart (ALL of which to be covered with more detail soon).

We arrived at the hotel just after the event started and quickly checked in. While putting down our bags, I handed Russ an extra Terror from Beyond Daves T-shirt which I’d meant as a joke but Russ honored me by actually wearing. This would give the impression that he was the other Dave and allow for more effective networking. Concerning event coverage, its always better when you’re a duo as opposed to a single. The ploy worked since several folks referred to him as “Dave” and a couple praised “our” site.

1Russ Represents…

Though “Russ” is every bit his real name as “Dave” is, this was an extremely nice thing for him to do. He’s not only worked the “Scares the Care” table at many horror events, he’s an extremely friendly and talented guy (which would become a theme this weekend), has a LOT of great friends (including actress, P.J. Soles), and can not only stand alone, but do so decisively taller than myself. It was likely more apt that I run around calling myself “Dave Wrangler” as opposed to him pretending to be a Dave but I both welcomed and appreciated his assistance. When it comes to ice-breaking with celebrities, keeping high/positive energy, as well as photography skills…there’s no doubt that he can be more effective than David Albaugh and I put together!

Our room was on the 6th floor and we grabbed the elevator down along with a woman carrying an unusual item…

IMG_8095

It turned out to be a cake…brought all the way from England! How this enthusiastic Brit (who brought it along for no other reason than to celebrate the convention with her US pals) kept it in one piece was amazing to me! The cake featured iconic horror characters such as Friday the 13th’s Jason, Linda Blair, as well as A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger’s glove popping through the top…

2

3

We’d no sooner walked into the main celebrity room when I bumped into the guys from Freakhouse Flicks…both were attending as civilians rather than clad in their PA host costumes. They’d just attended Indianapolis Horror Host, Sammy Terry’s, Wake the night before and were telling me all about it.

Apparently the turn out for the classic host was immense. Sammy Terry is one of the longest running horror hosts and, with his son now firmly at the reigns, likely to remain a presence in Indianapolis for many years to come. Obviously the current Sammy Terry was unable to show up at Days of the Dead but kept a presence none the less via a merchandise booth.

5

6

Days of the Dead attracts a loyal following of fans who often dress in their signature costumes.

4Watch them hands now, Joker!

1Kitty Zombie (Right) is always worth saying Hello to!

1Adam King’s “Ash” wrote the book on entertaining guests!

2

1No convention complete without the stunning Sasha Mullins!

There were some newer ones (at least for me) which I’ll be featuring in a separate post!

The initial plan was to do a walk-through before meeting any celebrities. However, this all changed when we saw legendary rocker, Lita Ford, with hardly anyone waiting to see her. Russ and I both knew that Friday nights are always slower and that this was likely a rare opportunity for us. Not wasting a moment, we immediately went to see her. Barely 10 minutes into the event, or first celebrity encounter was under way….

Next up…Lita Ford slams Sharon Osbourne and The Runaways…
